Building Your Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence: What’s New
Building Your Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence is the latest update of Velsoft’s courseware offerings.
Originally called Building Your Self-Esteem and Assertiveness Skills, the name of the softskills course was changed for two main reasons:
- Only one session deals with assertiveness, and
- Because the original course treated the concepts of self-esteem and self-confidence as the same. Although they are related, they are two different things, and we thought it was important to explore both concepts in more detail.
The refreshed course explains the differences between self-esteem and self-confidence and then looks at ways of improving both.
Why is this important? Because it’s difficult to be successful or happy if you are always saddled with doubts about yourself, your abilities, and your worth.
In 2004, Adler and Stewart noted that: “Self-esteem refers to a person’s overall sense of his or her value or worth. It can be considered a sort of measure of how much a person “values, approves of, appreciates, prizes, or likes him or herself.”
And according to self-esteem expert Morris Rosenberg, self-esteem is quite simply one’s attitude toward oneself (1965). He described it as a “favourable or unfavourable attitude toward the self.”
Possessing healthy self-esteem and self-confidence is an important factor in success, relationships, and happiness. Learning how to develop and enhance these traits in yourself will reap benefits in one’s personal life and one’s work life, and consequently, this course is a valuable asset to any trainer’s wares.
This was an extensive refresh, with quite a bit of the course changed:
- The order and names of some of the sessions to better reflect the material presented and create better flow.
- Information about first impressions was replaced with material about helping others as a way to increase self-esteem.
- The session on assertiveness was expanded on, with techniques for becoming more assertive added, along with new activities to practice recognizing assertive behavior and using the assertiveness formula.
- The session entitled ‘Ask For What You Want’ was replaced with a session on dealing with setbacks because some of the information in the former session was incorporated into the ‘Create What You Want’ session, and learning to be resilient is important to keep self-esteem intact. Failure is inevitable in life, and knowing how to bounce back is a valuable skill.
